atNorth has announced that world class visual content studio RVX is tapping into its facilities in Iceland to create on-demand IT and data services. atNorth will be providing resources on demand and tailored for RVX’s needs in order to offer flexibility and the ability to host their increasing workloads quickly and at scale.

RVX (Reykjavik Visual Effects) is a leading, award winning creative visual effects animation and production studio based in Reykjavik, Iceland. The studio specializes in visual effects and content for film, TV, game and VR projects. Their recent work on The Witcher — Series 2 won a BAFTA and was nominated for an Emmy Award for the ‘Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a season or a movie’ category this year.

Data-hungry applications

Having been involved with producing visual content for major film and TV projects such as Gravity, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Clash of the Titans, Sherlock Holmes and Everest, RVX’s business growth has been exponential. Continued growth in immersive visual experiences rely on data-hungry applications, which need efficient and sustainable computing power.

With processing requirements and energy consumption increasing at speed, RVX needed to future proof its IT capabilities in an agile, on-demand, flexible manner. atNorth’s hybrid data center sites allow RVX to scale resources up and down quickly, efficiently, and cost effectively. atNorth’s on-demand services will help RVX continue to grow and scale accordingly in an efficient and sustainable manner.

Timing and latency are critical

“Working with atNorth throughout this process has been a lifesaver,” said Dadi Einarsson, Co-Founder and Creative Director for RVX. “Timing and latency are critical for our business, and we needed to balance space and availability with cost efficiency, which atNorth has been able to deliver for us. The whole process was and continues to be handled exceptionally well, the team at atNorth has taken all the hard work away from us, which has helped our team be able to focus on other more important tasks.”

“In addition, all atNorth data center facilities lead with power-efficiency, cost-efficiency and a sustainable use of environmental resources,” continued Dadi. “Sustainability and the ability to be able to balance the energy consumption and outputs from our workloads is a key initiative for us. Partnering with atNorth enables us to draw on renewable resources and carbon efficiency for our entire data IT infrastructure in a responsible and sustainable way.”

Lowering the carbon footprint

Sustainability is a core company value for atNorth, it has designed its data centers from the ground up so that it can offer the best energy efficiency, using the least amount of equipment, whilst ensuring the safe operation of the data center, therefore lowering the carbon footprint of its data centers and that of its customers. atNorth applies circular principles to everything that the company does wherever possible. For example, its newest datacenter site in Stockholm operates on 100% renewable energy and uses efficient heat recovery for both air cooled and liquid cooled IT infrastructures. This allows all the residual heat from the data center to be recycled through Stockholm Exergi, Stockholm’s energy company, where the excess heat generated from the new data center can then heat up to 20,000 apartments.

A long-standing partnership

“We are excited to grow with RVX as a business — the studio is a dynamic and cutting-edge force in its industry,” said Ægir Rafn Magnússon, Business Development Director for atNorth. “In working with RVX, it was becoming clear that the studio needed facilities that could handle its increasingly compute-hungry applications and workloads, which often come in quick bursts and at short notice due to the nature of their work. Together, we have been able to tailor our service to support these workloads with a continued performance, efficiency, and low latency they count on from us.”

atNorth have been working with RVX since 2016. Its long-standing partnership has gone from strength to strength as atNorth continues to help the studio grow and scale its IT alongside its business successes. atNorth has expanded in recent years, evolving the services that it offers to clients whilst growing the team and expanding its portfolio of data center locations, with two currently in Iceland and Sweden and a third under construction in Akureyri in Iceland. The partnership has evolved over time as they have the ability to grow and expand services together.
