Datacenter company Equinix has become a victim of ransomware, the company itself reported. "Some" internal systems became infected with unspecified ransomware, according to a statement. The contamination would not affect the service or customer support.

The company also states that most customers have their own servers in the data centers and the incident has no impact on their business operations or the data on these servers. Equinix does not provide further details on the nature of the infection and what consequences this has or had for the company itself. It is also not reported how the infection may have occurred.

* Update 11 sept

Bleeping Computer claims to have received a copy of the ransom note, but we have not been able to verify its authenticity. According to Bleeping computer the ransom note contains a screenshot that suggest that the files that have been taken hostage contain financial information, accounting, payroll and other sensitive information.

 * Update 23 september

Equinix states on its website that the containment and mitigation efforts have progressed well since the detection of the incident. Furthermore Equinix claims it has reached a milestone that will prevent the release of any data associated with this incident.

The data center giant emphasized that data centers and services to customers have not been impacted by the incident but that they will continue to investigate the incident
