Local newspapers are reporting that Finnish real estate company FCDC Corp Oy wants to develop a 500MW data center at Hietavaara, 15km outside Rovaniemi, Lapland.
According to Jaakko Leinonen, the company's Director of Land Acquisition and Development, the goal is to obtain building rights for 180,000 square meters, equivalent to 25 football fields.
Leinonen said to local newspaper YLE that he believes that the design, construction and maintenance will employ a total of over a thousand people. The facility would as well as be a benefit to the local municipality and the state through a variety of taxes. Though the data center would use a lot of electricity, there is no indication of electricity shortages, especially in northern Finland. The aim is also to reuse the waste heat.
The data center is in its early stages and would be completed in 2029. There is no information yet about its future user(s).
