AmpTank, a Swiss-Finnish developer of energy storage in the Nordics, will build its first hyperscale data center project in Utajärvi, Finland. It will have an initial capacity of 100MW and the total value of the investment plan is 700-900 million euros.
AmpTank Finland Oy was established in 2021 with the purpose of developing energy storages in the Nordic region. It has several projects under development in Denmark and Finland, such as an additional 400MW of data center developments in Finland with immediate power available.
For this project, AmpTank and its partner Greensky Energy have established a project company, Data Tank Nordic Oy. Greensky Energy is a Finnish green transition accelerator, founded in 2023, that implements renewable energy projects. It acts as a development partner for Finland’s largest landowners and creates value together with international energy investors.
The construction of the data center in in the Mustikkakangas industrial area in Utajärvi is estimated to begin in early 2026 and would be operational in 2027. The project will connect to the nearby Fingrid substation, and with large solar, wind, and hydro projects adjacent there is the ability to expand over time.
"Utajärvi is where everything comes together”
“From our perspective, Utajärvi is where everything comes together,” says AmpTank’s Chairman of the Board Hannu Koivusalo. “Utajärvi is where existing and expanding renewable energy production and the opportunity for long-term cooperation with its producers, a highly cooperative and commercially minded municipality, the availability of land, the municipality’s coordinated cooperation with energy producers and consumers, the location and climate, and future plans for utilizing waste heat come together. These are the reasons why the municipality of Utajärvi was a natural partner for us,” says Koivusalo.
Utajärvi Mayor Anne Sormunen and Utajärvi Business Park Oy CEO Vuokko Paso are happy about the collaboration: “Utajärvi Mustikkakangas is located in a good location, with good transport connections. It is wonderful to follow energy complexes and investment plans for our area. In our industrial area, we strive to offer and enable flexible business plots for companies, suitable for their needs. Thanks to the clean energy produced nearby, the good location and the great business culture, it is great to start growing the Utajärvi business ecosystem together.” According to Mayor Anne Sormunen, Utajärvi has been collaborating with companies in the area for years, jointly implementing carbon-wise measures in all areas, and these generate vitality and added value for both parties. “More of these are needed,” she sums up.
