Finnish renewable energy development firm Winda Energy is planning a new data center development in Finnish Lapland. The company announced this week that the project, developed through Winda Energy Oy, will be located in Rajakangas, Keminmaa.

Construction will begin in 2027, with the goal of completing the first phase of the project in 2028. An area of approximately 15 hectares in the Rajakangas industrial area has been reserved for the project. The project is being implemented in European collaboration with Gi21 Capital, an investor and operator specialised in data centres. The 15-hectare site is expected to attract around €500 million ($582 million) in investment.

“Sea Lapland's power grid is very production-oriented, which creates extremely promising conditions for this data centre project. The strong renewable energy foundation in the region aligns perfectly with the growing demand for energy-intensive digital infrastructure,” said Tuomas Hooli, CEO of Winda Energy.

Keminmaa is a municipality in northern Finland, located near Kemi and Tornio in the Lapland region. The Rajakangas site is a 45-hectare industrial and logistics zone positioned at the intersection of the E8 and E75 highways. Winda Energy, founded in 2011, is a renewable energy company with wind and solar assets across Finland. It operates and develops more than a dozen wind farms totaling over 1GW, along with over 800MW of solar projects. Its majority shareholder is Czech private equity firm BHM Renewables, part of BHM Group. The company has also previously signed a power purchase agreement with Amazon.
