Telia Company

Telia, together with its supplier Ciena, has achieved record-high data transfer speeds between Oslo and Trondheim when testing the speed of its transport network. The transfer speed of 1.6 terabits per second in one optical channel is among the best in the world at this distance.

Telia is currently working on expanding the company's transport network from Trondheim all the way up to Tromsø. The transport network has been completed in Southern Norway. "This robust transport network enables our focus on highly secure and stable mobile and fixed networks", says Georg Svendsen, Head of Infrastructure at Telia Norway.

Sought-after destination

Telia Norge and Ciena recently marked an important technological milestone when they tested the speed of data transfers from Oslo to Trondheim, one of the routes in the country with the most data traffic. Powered by Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology, the test achieved 1.6 terabits per second for the first time in the Nordic region through a single optical channel. The test showed impressive results for both distance – 656 km – as well as for the number of so-called ROADMs (Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers), which in this case was seven.

Svendsen believes this type of speed in transport networks will help build Norway as a host country for data centers: “Global businesses are increasingly seeing Norway as a highly sought-after destination for building data centers, because we have an advantageous combination of affordable power and favorable climate conditions. This technological milestone with Ciena's WaveLogic 6 demonstrates our ability to build a more robust and scalable network that can handle increasing bandwidth demands and contribute to the important further digitalization of Norway,” he says.

A foundation for a new optical network

“This impressive achievement with Telia builds on a strong track record of Ciena milestones in coherent optics,” said Virginie Hollebecque, Vice President, EMEA, Ciena. “WL6e can help Telia create the foundation for a new optical network, designed to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence and data-driven applications. WL6 can also help position Telia Norway to support the increasing interest in Norway as a prime location for data center construction, capitalizing on the country's affordable energy and favourable climate.”

Ciena's WL6e is the industry's first high-bandwidth coherent transceiver that uses state-of-the-art 3nm silicon to drive significant economic benefits for operators, including a 50 percent reduction in space and watts per bit. The WL6e delivers massive 1.6 Tb/s, single-carrier wavelengths for metro ROADM deployment and maximizes network coverage for 800G connectivity.
