Landsvirkjun will be atNorth’s electricity supplier for the company’s new data centre in Akureyri, in accordance with a new power purchasing agreement (PPA), effective from June 1st. The PPA is valid for five years and offers atNorth firm capacity up to 5 MW.

The companies also entered into a two-year controllable load PPA where atNorth will purchase up to 10 MW. However, purchases in accordance with this PPA will reduce over time with a larger PPA for firm capacity.

Even the load

atNorth has been a Landsvirkjun customer for many years, with data centre operations in Hafnarfjörður and Reykjanesbær. The construction of the data centre in Akureyri started in the middle of 2022, with inauguration on June 9th 2023. The data centre is housed in a 2,500 m2 building, with further expansion possible.

“Congratulations to atNorth on their third data centre in Iceland! The location of the data centre in Akureyri is very practical as energy demand in the South is already high and it is preferable to further even the load", siad Tinna Traustadóttir, EVP Sales and Customer Service at Landsvirkjun.

Growing demand

Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO, atNorth added: “Our business relationship with Landsvirkjun has always been good and beneficial for both companies. Our new data centre creates an opportunity in the industry in Iceland, also we expect it to have various positive effects on the economy in Akureyri. We see that demand for data centre services is continually growing and our investment plans are on a scale of dozens of ISK billions annually to meet that demand.”

Demand for miscellaneous data storage is constantly increasing, just as demand for powerful computers used for calculations, data processing, and simulation, to name a few. Therefore, super computing services of the kind that atNorth offers are in high demand since commissioning specialist services for such tasks offers companies efficient solutions. Furthermore, the weather in Iceland provides natural cooling effects for the essential equipment in the data centres.
