Energy company Fortum and Swedish data center company EcoDataCenter have entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the data center in Falun.
EcoDataCenter's facility will be supplied with fossil-free electricity from Fortum's hydropower plant in Dalälven through local guarantees of origin. The agreement covers 10 MW in SE3 and extends between 2026 and 2030. In addition to the PPA agreement, Fortum takes over responsibility for the physical and balance sheet responsibility for EcoDataCenter's operations in Falun.
"Our anchoring in Dalarna and the close cooperation with local power producers is a key to growth - for us and for the industry as a whole. The agreement with Fortum, which provides our facility in Falun with power directly from the Dalälven, is a good example of that. When data centers and energy companies plan together, natural solutions arise that create new opportunities for the entire region," says Peter Michelson, CEO at EcoDataCenter .
"Data center is an important and growing industry in which we at Fortum see great potential", says Simon-Erik Ollus, head of large customers and electricity market at Fortum . "This is an important first step for us in Sweden in a conscious investment in this segment. The fact that we can start this journey precisely in Dalarna, where we have such a strong local presence with our water power, makes it extra rewarding,"
Fortum owns and operates 39 hydropower plants along the Dalälven river, which forms the backbone of the region's energy system. For EcoDataCenter, the data center in Falun is the company's first data center to be put into operation. It is currently building its second facility, on the former Kvarnsveden paper mill site in Dalarna, which is set to be ready mid-2027.
