Finnish companies Vatajankoski and E-Heat have pluged a containerized data center into a local heating network in Western Finland. Waste heat from the data center now heats the Honkajoki urban area.
A new 1 MW data center, operated by E-Heat, has been completed in the area of the Kirkkokallio eco-industrial park in Honkajoki in Western Finland. The waste heat from the data center be utilised in the production of district heating in the Honkajoki urban area. The project will mean lower emissions and more energy-efficient heat production in the area. The Puistotie grate boiler, which previously produced heat in the area, was turned off, but from now on will now fuction as a backup plant.
Vatajankoski is a new energy company, while E-Heat builds and operates data centers that recycle waste heat from server equipment.
The data center was implemented as a container solution. During the construction phase of the data center, Vatajankoski was responsible for the implementation of medium-voltage solutions and power supply, as well as for connecting them to district heating, while E-Heat was responsible for construction and server equipment as a whole.
In the future, the majority of district heating in the Honkajoki urban area will be produced with data heat without combustion.
