Hitachi Energy is investing approximately SEK 3.7 billion (€327 million) to expand its operations in Sweden, across the entire product portfolio. This is part of the company's global investment of well over 4 billion euro in manufacturing, engineering expertise, digitization, R&D and partnerships until 2027.
Hitachi Energy will carry out an extensive expansion and modernization of its flagship factory in Ludvika and create a new workplace in Västerås. Hitachi Energy will also hire an additional 2.000 employees in Sweden by 2027. The expansion, which is expected to be completed in 2027, is driven by the accelerating transition to renewable energy. The recently announced global investment and expansion plans enable the company to meet customer expectations and market demands.
In the last month alone, important HVDC projects have been announced, which are important to meet the rapidly growing market demand. With the support of new scalable business models developed by Hitachi Energy, framework agreements were signed with RTE in France, RWE in Germany, Marinus Link in Australia, in addition a service agreement with Pattern Energyin the U.S. The company also announced Sa.Co.I.3 – the interconnection between Italy and France, another industry-leading multi-terminal solution.
Expands capacity in Ludvika
The Ludvika factory, with over 120 years of innovation, manufactures transformers, high voltage products and HVDC systems and will expand by more than 30,000 square meters. This will increase the manufacturing capacity of large transformers to accelerate the delivery of key HVDC projects and is part of the recently announced global transformer plan on 1.5 billion dollars. Ludvika's transformer investment involves expansion in the transformer factory with new machines, assembly and test stations, along with sustainable and innovative manufacturing technology that improves operational efficiency.
In addition, Hitachi Energy will invest in its factory in Figeholm, which manufactures insulation materials used in transformers in Ludvika and in other transformer factories. They are to install a new fossil-free energy plant adjacent to the factory in line with the strategic sustainability plan to be carbon dioxide neutral in their own operations. Another production line will be added to increase the capacity of dry capacitors that play a crucial role in power conversion and are used to provide a more stable voltage.
Hitachi Energy's investments in Ludvika will support the further development of HVDC technology for multi-terminal HVDC systems, and the integration of remote renewable energy transmission, grid integration systems, grid automation and software solutions and services.
New campus in Västerås
In Västerås, Hitachi Energy will invest and expand its operations and create a new workplace to strengthen collaborations, creativity and innovation. The new 30.000 square meter workplace will accommodate 1.800 employees including the research and development center, offices and a state-of-the-art factory manufacturing products for power grid protection, monitoring and control. Moving into the new premises is planned to take place in 2027.
