US data center developer and operator Prime Data Centers is planning to build an AI-ready data center in the Vähänummi industrial area in Järvenpää, Finland. Prime Data Centers is implementing the project in collaboration with its local partner Brunswick Real Estate.
The project is moving into the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure, coordinated by the Finnish Licensing and Supervision Agency, which began operations in 2026. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, subject to the completion of the environmental impact assessment process and the necessary permits for the project.
"We are pleased to announce the Järvenpää data center project and launch the environmental impact assessment", says Nicholas Laag, founder and CEO of Prime Data Centers. "The project demonstrates our commitment to Finland and the Nordic countries as we respond to the growing demand for digital infrastructure required by cloud services, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. We are working closely with the city of Järvenpää and the local community throughout the process. The cooperation with the city has been constructive from the beginning."
The initial investment value of the project is approximately EUR 1.2 billion and the data center will, according to Prime, create approximately 40 direct, highly skilled jobs and a total of approximately 200 permanent jobs in the region. During construction, the project would employ an estimated 200 people. The planned data center would be located on a plot of approximately 12 hectares on Emalikatu in the Vähänummi industrial area. It will be connected to the Finnish grid and includes a plan for waste heat recovery and possible connection to the Järvenpää district heating network.
"The City of Järvenpää is positive about the Prime Data Centers investment project. If implemented, the project would strengthen the city's vitality and employment and produce significant technological impacts nationwide", says Järvenpää Mayor Iiris Laukkanen.
"The project supports the city's business and economic program as well as climate and environmental goals. It has significant employment and economic potential in the area. Prime Data Centers' commitment to environmental impact assessment and sustainability is important to us, especially from the perspective of utilizing waste heat", says Mikko Autere, Director of Urban Development of Järvenpää.
