Microsoft has signed a preliminary agreement on the acquisition of approximately 190 hectares of land in Vaasa and Mustasaari on the west coast of Finland to support a potential datacenter development.
Approximately two-thirds of the area is located in Vaasa and one-third in Mustasaari. The land is located in the GigaVaasa industrial zone. The location was selected based on the existing industrial environment and infrastructure in the area.
Microsoft is currently developing its first datacenter region in Southern Finland and is building data centers in Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti.
“We are very pleased to welcome a trusted, international operator to the GigaVaasa area. If realized, the project will bring additional data and energy expertise, further strengthening our position as a global hub for energy technology,” says Tomas Häyry, Mayor of Vaasa.
“Investments in data technology and artificial intelligence are a welcome addition to the already strong capabilities of the Vaasa region. One of the region’s key assets in terms of appeal and attractiveness is its diversity of job opportunities. It is clear that today’s announcement is a significant development for the entire Vaasa region,” says Rurik Ahlberg, Mayor of Mustasaari.
“We are pleased to take this step forward together with Vaasa and Mustasaari. Finland is an important country for us, and we are committed to investing here for the long term,” says Teemu Vidgrén, General Manager, Microsoft Finland. “This land acquisition builds on long-term collaboration with local municipalities and authorities. From here, our focus is on working with partners to explore what could be developed on the site, and we will share more as our plans take shape in dialogue with local communities.”
